Last, year at this time, I wrote to you about an important workplace distinction of which, I was very proud. The Herb Chambers Companies were recognized as being amongst The Boston Globe’s Top 100 Places to Work for 2009. I am so proud to tell you, we have just been notified by the Boston Globe, that we have earned this distinction again for 2010. This year we are ranked eighth in the Large Employer category.

We were selected from more than 1,000 employers who participated in the survey. In fact, we are the only automotive dealer ever to have received this award and now we’ve earned it twice. What I love so much about this is that it was the enthusiastic recognition of our employees’ that made this possible when they nominated our company as a Top 100 workplace. There is no higher privilege in business than to have your employees emphatically state, “What a great place to work”! … And then, want to tell the whole world…amazing!

When asked why our employees feel this way I have to say it’s frankly because we care about all of them and put a lot into them– so that they can do the best job possible. We also take our employee training and refresher courses very seriously, because in order to be successful in life and work, listening and communicating well are two very important skills to possess…these two traits will take anyone far no matter where they work, but nowhere are these two more important than at the Herb Chambers Companies. Customers can’t feel well-served if they can’t be understood, can’t trust our consultants and service representatives, given the ‘run-around’ or can’t get the right information about any one of our 31 brands and hundreds of vehicle models.

Simply put, we want to make feel people appreciated about doing business with us, because I appreciate every customer and have deliberately set our customer service standard extremely high. We have a saying around here that every vehicle is purchased one at a time and behind every one of those sales should be a happy customer. This makes our business ‘report card’ shine, because doing ‘all good’ in business makes or breaks our success.

A big part of our employees’ satisfaction and success is that not only were they offered an opportunity when they joined our organization; but what’s more, they’ve learned to recognize when to take it and others like it along the way. This is huge for anybody building a career…if they can’t identify when to push themselves and take the next step forward…they’re going to almost certainly miss out. In fact, as we come out of what some say was the worst recession since the 30’s depression, we tested our convictions by moving ahead to complete $60 million in new facilities. This is certainly because we’re human and sometimes that enters in to it…but more probably than not for example, our service bays see about 350,000 vehicles a year! Now that’s an astounding number of vehicles …to have every one of these appointments go like clockwork without a mistake or oversight would be remarkable. However; when issues do arise, we take care of them…more often than not overcompensating… because we’ll have greater loyalty from that customer down the road, if we always make it right!

Of our future going into 2011; I can only see ‘blue sky’. These are my code words to our employees for smooth sailing and my confidence in the New Year’s economy and what I hope to be another year of unprecedented growth, good fortune, happy customers and fantastic employees.
